Calculate your combined VA disability rating using the official VA math formula. Add your individual ratings below.
The VA doesn't simply add your disability percentages together. Instead, they use "VA math" — a whole-body approach that considers remaining efficiency after each disability.
Start with 100% (whole body). For each disability, subtract that percentage from your remaining efficiency. Example: A 50% and a 30% rating = 100 - 50% = 50 remaining. Then 50 - 30% of 50 (15) = 35 remaining. Combined = 65%, which rounds to 70%.
The VA rounds to the nearest 10%. If your combined rating ends in 5 or higher, it rounds up. Below 5 rounds down. For example, 65% rounds to 70%, but 64% rounds to 60%.
If you have disabilities affecting both arms, both legs, or one arm and one leg, the VA adds a 10% bonus to those combined ratings before factoring them into your overall rating.
Understanding VA math helps you know which new claims could push you to the next rating tier. Adding a 10% condition when you're at 64% combined would round you up to 70% — a significant increase in monthly compensation.
